Natural Dyes…Colours from the Wilderness

At the moment I have been making dye samples for my Wild Dyes course at the Globe this Sat afternoon. I only use non toxic mordants (though you don’t want alum in your eyes)!

As well as collecting wild dye plants, we’ll be learning to use mordants and how to change colours by changing the pH of the water. Mordants are substances that help bind dye pigments to a fibre – in our case, wool. We’ll be using several metal salts and I’l show you an easy way to make your own!

We’ll be using raw wool fleece and get stuck in washing out the lanolin oils so we can dye our wool. You’re welcome to bring other natural fibres from home, such as plain undyed cotton, linen or silk.

We’ll also play with vegetable and spice dyes you can find in your kitchen!

I have another Wild Dyes course running in Sept for those who can’t make this Sat.

For the 28th Sept…

If you’re interested and can’t make these dates, do let me know. I may be able to get a few of you together and run another Dyes course.
