I discovered a patch of wild Red poppies (NOT the Opium kind) round the back of Homebase whilst searching for firewood. These badlands make great poppy habitat. Poppies grow in disturbed soil and wasteland. That’s why they grew in Flanders Fields in France.

Back at my boat I flicked off the top of the cases – it looks like a pie crust lid – and tipped out tiny waterfalls of miniscule jet black seeds. You can get a fair amount from a small patch of poppies.
Poppy seed is great on bread rolls, but for this recipe I’m going to make goat’s cheese straws…

After sticking them all in a plastic beaker, all I had to do was get a cheese straw recipe and swap the cheddar for HARD goat’s cheese. It worked admirably well. Press in the poppy seeds as you near the end of flattening out the dough!
